Samples will be collected with a decontaminated teflon bailer and poured directly into pre-
washed, laboratory-supplied containers. The amount of air mixing with the samples will be
minimized by tilting the bottle to allow water to run down the inside wall of the bottle.
Plastic bottles will be filled completely full to minimize air contact. The well number, date,
time, and analysis will be written directly on the sample tag with a waterproof pen. Filled
sample bottles will be placed directly into a cooler and packed with ice.
Surface water samples at each sample location will be collected with a precleaned dipper
or bottle. This water in the collection container will then be used to fill the sampling
bottles. The collection container will be submerged into the holding pond or slough with a
minimum of surface disturbance. It will then be held with the mouth partially submerged
so that the container fills slowly and continuously. The collection container will then be
removed with minimum disturbance, and the water emptied into a tilted sample bottle and
allowed to flow down the side of the bottle with minimum turbulence. Dipping and filling
will continue until the sample bottles are filled.
A written record will be maintained that documents each stage in the sampling process.
This record will be kept in a field log that includes the following information:
• Sample number
• Location and description of the sampling point
• Identification of crew members
• Type of sample (groundwater or surface water, normal or duplicate, etc.)
• Sampling methodology
• Sample preservation
• Date and time of collection
• Field observations and measurements
• Decontamination procedures
Decontamination Procedures
All equipment that may come into contact with groundwater or surface water and potentially
affect the samples will be decontaminated prior to contact. Decontamination will consist of
the following: (1) rinse in clean tap water; (2) wash with clean tap water and TSP or Alco-
nox; (3) rinse with clean tap water; (4) rinse with isopropanol; and (5) rinse with distilled
water followed by air drying.
Sample Packaging and Shipment
The following steps summarize sample packing and shipping procedures:
• Secure the lid of each sample bottle.
• Double-check that the sample label sticker has been completed on the sample
bottle.
• Wrap glass bottles with bubble-pack to prevent breakage.
SAC/SAC36357/041.WP5 10 8/94
