August 13, 2007
Project 13290.000
Ms. Amy Terrell
California Regional Water Quality Control Board
Central Valley Region
11020 Sun Center Drive, Suite 200
Rancho Cordova, California 95670
Subject: Revisions to the Additional Groundwater Investigation Work Plan
UniFirst Facility
Stockton, California
Dear Ms. Terrell:
On behalf of UniFirst Corporation (UniFirst), Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. (Geomatrix), has
prepared this letter providing you with an interim report concerning the status of work
undertaken to date under the April 15, 2007, Additional Groundwater Investigation Work Plan
(Work Plan) for the UniFirst facility located at 819 North Hunter Street in Stockton, California
(the site). Based on interim results from that work,we also intend to undertake additional field
activities, as described on the next page.
BACKGROUND
While assessing soil and groundwater conditions in the vicinity of a removed underground fuel
storage tank, chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), primarily tetrachloroethylene,
were detected in groundwater beneath the site. In a January 30, 2007, letter to UniFirst, the
California Regional Water Quality Control Board—Central Valley Region(RWQCB)requested
that UniFirst assess the nature and extent of the VOCs in groundwater and conduct quarterly
groundwater monitoring. Geomatrix prepared the April 2007 Work Plan for UniFirst's submittal
to the RWQCB. The Work Plan was approved by the RWQCB in a June 13, 2007, letter to
UniFirst. As requested in the June 2007 letter, an estimated schedule for completion of the
groundwater assessment and groundwater monitoring was presented in a June 27, 2007, email to
Ms. Amanda Montgomery of the RWQCB from Mr. William Pipes of Geomatrix. The schedule
consisted of the following estimated completion dates:
Task 1 —Groundwater Sampling from the Existing On-Site Wells: by July 31, 2007
Task 2—Downgradient Groundwater Sampling: by August 31, 2007
Task 3 —Additional Monitoring Well Installation: by August 31, 2007
Task 4—Evaluation of Potential Sources: by August 31, 2007
