APP/SSHP
Soil Excavation at California National Guard Armory
Lodi,California
The activities in this section of the SSHP are general in nature. It will be the responsibility of the
SSHO, working with the PM, to assess specific work tasks on a daily basis, to evaluate the
associated hazards, and to implement proper controls.
4.3 EVALUATION AND CONTROLS
Evaluation of safety and health hazards at the site will be an ongoing process. Safety hazards
will be assessed based on such factors as regulatory requirements, severity, or hazard
outcome, and proximity to the hazard. These evaluations for specific tasks will be conducted
during pre-job planning and site inspections.
Health hazards which may cause occupational illness will be evaluated through medical
surveillance, control of dermal contact with potentially contaminated soils and asbestos
containing materials, assessment of the potential for contact and skin absorption, and through
measurement of environmental physical hazards including noise, heat, and cold.
Biological hazards will be evaluated based on observed conditions at the site to determine if
flying insects, vectors, or existing vegetation pose a threat to personnel.
Control methods are generally classified as administrative (e.g., training and work rest
regimens); work practice/engineering (e.g., wetting, foaming, work rules, contamination control,
decontamination procedures, fire fighting equipment, and procedures); and PPE (e.g.,
respirators, chemical protective clothing, safety glasses, gloves, footwear and hard hats).
OTI E 8
