STATE OF CALIFORNIA- Environmental Pro•n Agency PETE WILSON, Governor
-M
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD "w
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION e
3443 Routier Road, Suite A .
Sacramento, CA 95827-3098
PHONE: (916) 255-3000
FAX: (916) 255-3015
18 February 1994
Mr. John Ewing
Leprino Foods
P.O. Box 173400
Denver, Colorado 80217-3400
GEOPROBE INVESTIGATION, LEPRINO FOODS FACILITY, TRACY, SAN JOAQUIN
COUNTY
I have reviewed the 5 January 1994 report entitled Summary of Geoprobe Investigation submitted
by Kleinfelder for the Leprino Foods Facility in Tracy. This report was submitted to the Board on
2 February 1994.
The geoprobe investigation has not fully characterized the lateral extent of diesel contamination in
the soil or ground water at the facility. We require characterization of the extent of soil and ground
water contamination to nondetectable levels. The locations of the three proposed monitoring wells
are acceptable, but they will not likely define the full lateral extent, so additional monitoring wells
will be needed. Soil samples shall be collected for laboratory analysis from the three new
monitoring well's. The final report shall include an analysis of the lateral extent of soil and ground
water contamination with recommendations for additional characterization needs.
As it is now impossible to meet the original 28 February 1994 deadline for the report of findings,
and as Mr. Bruce Hilton of Kleinfelder has informed me that the monitoring wells can be installed
next week, the report of findings is now due by 18 March 1994.
As discussed in the report, ground water samples were collected by Kleinfelder for the Board.
These samples were analyzed by the Board laboratory for purgeable aromatics by EPA Method 602.
Samples also were sent to FGL Environmental for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg)
analysis by EPA Method 8015. As the attached results show, the 602 analyses identified no
detectable levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, or xylene, but low levels of napthalene were
detected in geoprobe locations GP-1, GP-4, GP-6, GP-7, and GP-8. The 8015 analyses did not
identify detectable levels of TPHg.
