T1 I
k" K L E 1 N F E L D E R
94 FES -3 PIN 2: 03
January 5, 1994
File: 24-220176-E00 5
Mr. John Ewing
Leprino Foods
P.O. Box 173400
Denver, Colorado 80217-3400
Subject: Summary of Geoprobe Investigation
Leprino Foods Facility
2401 McArthur Drive
Tracy, California
Dear Mr. Ewing:
Kleinfelder has completed the Geoprobe investigation of the subject facility diesel fuel spill.
The Geoprobe investigation was performed to provide preliminary groundwater data to
optimize the location of permanent monitoring wells. Soil samples were also collected
surrounding the former diesel fuel soil excavation to further assess soil conditions. This letter
summarizes the field procedures used, results of data collected, interpretation of findings, and
recommendations for further investigation.
GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATION FINDINGS
A total of eight Geoprobes, identified as GP-1 through GP-8, were driven at the locations
shown on Plate 1 - Geoprobe Location Map. The Geoprobes, consisting of 3/4 inch diameter
galvanized steel pipe, were driven to a depth where first groundwater was encountered (19.5 to
24.5 feet). In most cases, samples were then obtained through the Geoprobe pipe, the first 5
feet of which has slots open to the soil, with a stainless steel bailer. At two locations, GP-2
and GP-3, groundwater did not freely enter the Geoprobe pipe, possibly due to smearing of the
slots by clay in the soil, consequently the pipe was removed and a groundwater sample was
bailed from the open boring. Table 1 summarizes sample I.D. numbers, sample depths, and
other field information.
The groundwater samples were analyzed for TPH extractable by EPA Method 8015/3550
(diesel range) by Superior Precision Analytical, Inc. The results of these analyses are
provided in Appendix A and are presented on Plate 2. Groundwater samples were also
collected by Kleinfelder for Ms. Polly Lowry of the California Regional Water Quality
Control Board (CRWQCB) and were reportedly analyzed for EPA 602, Purgeable Aromatics.
This report does not address the CRWQCB data which was not available to Kleinfelder at the
time of this report.
24-220176-E00/CR30-1 Page 1 of 3 January 5, 1994
Copyright 1994 Kleinfelder, Inc.
KLEINFELDER 3077 Fite Circle, Sacramento, CA 95827 (916) 366-1701
