Work Plan—Soil Boring Installation Page 2
Former UPRR Service Yard
Project 376.2
March 31, 2003
installed along the south and central parts of the former rail spur on the eastern side of the
subject Property.
2.1 Field Work
The field work associated with this work plan will consist of obtaining a drilling permit,
mobilizing to the site with a Geo-Probe drilling rig, and advancing three soil borings at
designated locations for the purpose of obtaining soil and groundwater samples.
2.1.1 Geo-Probe Soil Borings
One boring will be advance through the former tank pit to a depth sufficient to penetrate the
surface of groundwater, which is estimated to lie at a depth of about 30 to 35 feet. The other
two borings will be advanced to a depth of 20 feet to assess soil conditions under a former
rail spur. These borings will be designated S13-1, S13-2, and SB-3 respectively and will be
located at designated sites as shown on the attached site map.
The Geo-Probe is a truck mounted drilling system that uses direct push methodology to
+.. collect soil and groundwater samples. Four foot long by 1.5-inch diameter stainless steel
rods are pushed or hammered into the ground using a hydraulic ram or the hydraulically
actuated hammer mounted on the ram. Soil samples are collected using a 1.5-foot long by
. 1.5 inch inside diameter drive sampler lined with a plastic sample sleeve. This device is
activated by removing a retaining bolt from the top of the device by inserting rods through
the hollow stem of the probe rods. Removing this retaining bolt allows the drive point to
retract through the sampling tube and a sample to be collected.
The soil borings will be drilled using 1.5" outside diameter Geo-Probe drilling equipment
`' owned and operated by V & W Drilling (C-57 License #720904). The first boring (SB-1)
will be advanced to the groundwater surface and soil samples will be collected for geologic
logging and possible laboratory analysis. Upon completion of the boring, a groundwater
sample will be collected for laboratory analysis. The shallower borings (SB-2 & -3) are not
expected to encounter groundwater, but soil samples will be collected for laboratory analysis.
LW
Upon reaching total depth in each boring and collecting the final soil or groundwater sample,
the borings will be filled to grade with neat cement.
6W
2.1.2 Geology
4.0 A detailed log will be made of each boring. The information to be noted include such data as
sample depths, soil / sediment type and description (color, texture, composition, hardness,
moisture content, and post-depositional changes that have occurred in the sediments), and
t.0 horizons of detectable contamination (detected by field methods).
LM 2937 Veneman Avenue, Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
