Section 4
Soil and Water Sampling Plan
4.1 SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples will be collected at the site to classify the geologic materials penetrated by the
boreholes according to the Unified Soil Classification system. Representative soil samples will
also be collected for soil physical and mineralogical laboratory testing as described in Section
2.3.1.
Spoils for drilling will be dispersed to land.
4.2 WELL WATER SAMPLING
The initial water sample from the new well will be collected a minimum of 48 hours or longer
after development has been completed. Depth to water measurement will be made in all wells,to
within 1/100th of a foot, prior to purging and sampling.
4.2.1 WATER LEVEL MEASUREMENTS
Depth to water measurement will be completed,in all wells, prior to purging and sampling.
Water-level measurements will be taken with an electronic tape (water-level sounder). All
water-level measurements will be taken with the same water-level indicator to insure
reproducibility of the results. Water levels will be recorded to the nearest 0.01 foot and will be
referenced to the surveyed data point(north quadrant of the PVC well casing, and or notch
carved into the PVC casing).
4.2.2 PURGING
A minimum of three well volumes will be purged from the well prior to sampling. Purging will
be accomplished by pumping with a portable pump or by manually bailing. Field water quality
parameters (temperature,pH, electrical conductivity, and oxidation-reduction potential)will be
monitored during purging. Purging will continue until at least three of the monitored field
parameters vary by less than 10% for successive purge volumes. Data will be recorded on well-
specific data sheets. It is possible that the well may run dry prior to purging three well volumes.
If this occurs, samples will be collected as described below.
4.2.3 SAMPLE COLLECTION
Water samples will be collected with the pump or bailer used to purge the well. In the event the
well pumps or bails dry during purging, water levels will be allowed to recover overnight and
samples will be collected from the first water pumped or bailed from the well on the following
day. Water samples collected will be submitted to a state certified laboratory for analysis of the
constituents listed in Section 2.2.2.
May 2006 Main Stone Property
4-1 Effluent Storage and Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Investigation Workplan
