' • Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)by SM5210B;
• Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD)by SM522013;
' • Ortho-Phosphate by SM 4500-PE or EPA 300.1;
• Total Manganese by E200.7;
• Dissolved Iron by EPA 200.7; and
• Ferric and ferrous Iron by SM 3500-FeD B4c.
These samples were collected and analyzed during the third quarter groundwater-monitoring
event.
3.4 Evaluation of Saturated Soil
' US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidance documents recommend the
assessment of the properties of the contaminants to be treated such as; concentration, vapor
pressure, Henrys Law Constant, and boiling range. Gasoline contamination at concentrations
' observed throughout the commingled plume, fit within the screening criteria of the guidance
document indicating the technology is very effective. The decision tree in the guidance
document also relies on the evaluation of physical and geochemical conditions of the aquifer.
' 3.4.1 Hydrocarbon Degrading Bacteria
' Bacteria that degrade petroleum hydrocarbons have two characteristics. They are aerobic or
facultative, meaning that the terminal electron acceptors for the bacteria are either oxygen or a
combination of oxygen and other compounds such as nitrate or sulfate. Secondly, these
1 bacteria are heterotrophic, meaning they rely on an organic source of carbon. Samples of the
permeable silty sand and sand layers, CT-MW-9-87 (73.5-75'), CT-MW-9-120 (80-81.5'),
and CT-MW-9-120 (115-116.5') were submitted for total heterotrophic plate counts and for
plate counts of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria.
The criteria in the decision tree of the guidance document for effective biosparging are a
heterotrophic count of 104-107 colony-forming units per gram (cfu/g) of soil. The reported
values were greater than 106 cfu/g for all three samples. The reported values of hydrocarbon
degrading bacteria were all greater than 104 cfu/g for all three samples. These results indicate
' that biosparging in the `B" and "C" permeable zones would be effective. The data is
summarized in Table 6.
' 3.4.2 Aquifer Characteristics and Nutrient Levels
Some of the characteristics for the aquifer, such as permeability, are difficult to test. PSC was
' not able to collect sufficient sample of the permeable material to test permeability in the
laboratory. As previously discussed, the evaluation of permeability relied on values obtained
in literature. Based on the results of the samples collected from the permeable zones, the
Monitoring Well Installation
and
BioSparge Evaluation Report
' Prepared For:Sure Lee Bakery Omup,Inc. 16 Prepared By:PSC Industrial Outsourcing,LP
Sere Lee—Lincoln Street 2009-12-03-MW Installation&BioSparge Evaluation Report(Final).doc Report Date:December 3,2009
