 %..1
Soil & Groundwater Excavation Work Plan Advanced Environmental Concepts, Inc.
The excavator will bring each soil sample to the surface for laboratory sample collection. The following
+.. procedures will be used during sample collection.
1. A qualified AEC representative will push a brass sleeve into an undisturbed
V
portion of the soil;
2. The brass sleeve will be sealed with Teflon tape, plastic end caps, and duct
tape after ensuring that no head space is present;
Ono
3. The brass sleeve will then be labeled, handed to the chemist in the mobile
lab, and stored in a cooler with blue ice;
`r 4. All soil samples will be recorded on a Chain-of-Custody document to ensure
sample integrity and traceability;
+ 5. Selected soil samples will be analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons
as gasoline, diesel (TH-g,d) by EPA method 8015-modified and for volatile
aromatics (BTXE) by EPA method 8020. Analyses will be performed by a
California Certified Laboratory.
V
Soil sampling of the newly formed spoils pile will occur initially. Five equally spaced and representative
soil samples will be collected from the spoils pile to determine current background concentrations.
v After two weeks of landfarming, progress sampling of the gasoline and diesel impacted soil will be
conducted. This will consist of collecting five additional equally spaced and representative soil
samples.
Confirmatory soil sampling following completion of landfarming will follow a grid pattern over the
treatment pile. One soil sample will be collected for each 50-cubic yards of soil excavated for an
estimated total of 26 soil samples. These will be collected at the predetermined points using a hand
L.. auger and drive sampler at a depth of three feet in the soil treatment pile. The soil samples will be
analyzed for TH by EPA method 8015 and for BTXE by EPA method 8020. The samples will be
delivered to a California Certified Laboratory for analysis of the requested parameters. Chain-of-
6W custody protocol will be followed to ensure sample integrity and traceability.
4.5 Backfill and Compaction
V
Upon laboratory confirmation of satisfactory remediation of the impacted soil by excavation and upon
approval of the SJCEHD,the excavation will be backfilled. Initially, crushed rock will be imported to
4 cover the floor of the excavation to a minimum thickness of one foot. A permeable geotextile fabric
will be laid over the rock so that it can be bridged with soil.
The clean,stockpiled borrow soil will be returned to the excavation and compacted in roughly one foot
+ lifts using mechanical compaction equipment.
The equipment is expected to achieve 90% relative compaction. The excavations will be backfilled to
. surface and graded to ensure a consistent drainage pattern.
V
V
Project: AEC 97V-1845 8
.ENVIRONMENTAL CONCEPTS WITH DESIGN IN MIND-
4400ASHEROAD.1t206 BAKERSFIELD.CA93313 8051831-1646 - FAX 805/831-1771
