and soil and groundwater located approximately at the central
Portion of the Site contained detectable concentrations of total
Petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline (TPHg) , TPH as diesel
(TPHd) , and TPH as motor oil (TPHo) Additionally, the water
reportedly collected within the 550 gallon underground storage
tank (UST) located at the eastern portion of the Site contained
' elevated concentrations of TPHg, TPHd; and benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX)
' Bamer Construction Company removed the abovementioned 550-gallon
UST in September 1999 . Soil samples collected beneath the UST
and from the soil overlying the UST contained non-detectable
concentrations of TPHg, BTEX, and methyl tertiary-butyl ether
' (MTBE) ; and low to non-detectable concentrations of lead The
soil sample collected beneath the pipeline located directly
ad3acent to and east of the UST contained non-detectable
' concentrations of BTEX, MTBE, and detectable concentrations of
TPHg and lead.
ICES conducted a site investigation and installed three
monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2 , and MW-3 ) in December 1999 Based
on the laboratory analytical results, PID readings, and field
observations collected during the investigation, it appeared that
the soil and groundwater containing elevated concentrations of
petroleum hydrocarbons was limited to approximately the central
portion of the Site . The groundwater samples collected from
1 wells MW-2 and MW-3 contained non-detectable concentrations of
TPHg, TPHd, BTEX, 1, 2-Dichloroethane (1, 2-DCA) , and 5 oxyginates,
and low concentrations of MTBE and lead Detectable
concentrations of TPHd and lead; and non-detectable
' concentrations of TPHg, BTEX, MTBE, 1, 2-DCA, and 5 oxygenates
were detected in the groundwater sample collected from well MW-1 .
The second round of groundwater monitoring was conducted by ICES
in June 2000 Laboratory analytical results of the groundwater
samples collected from MW-1, MW-2 , and MW-3 in December 1999 and
June 2000 are presented in Appendix B.
4.0 SITE GEOLOGY
' Sediments underlying the Site consist predominantly of a brown to
tan-brown clayey silt with a localized lens of tan to grayish-tan
sandy silt based on the lithologzc logs of borings that were
previously drilled at the Site
i
Previous depth-to-groundwater measurements conducted at the Site
' indicated that groundwater was approximately 16 feet bgs
Mapping and analysis of the groundwater elevation data suggested
2
