The subsurface was cleared of underground utilities within 50
feet of excavation area by notifying Underground Service Alert.
' 2.1 Septic System Discussion
' The septic system was left in place during remedial activities. A small section of pipe
connecting the home to the septic tank was damaged and replaced during soil excavation.
' During the excavation activities GTI learned that the SWRCB had concerns that the soil
contamination was sourced from poor business practices in the workshop (i.e. gasoline used
for cleaning parts was poured into the sink and impacted soil through the septic system). The
' shop, used to maintain vehicles and equipment, is located southwest of the house and directly
west of the former UST location (Figure 2).
' The shop is not and has never been connected to the septic system located next to the former
UST location. The shop has a separate septic tank which is located approximately 75 feet
northwest of the former UST location (Figure 2) and since the soil between the shop's septic
tank and the edge of the excavation is clean, it is highly unlikely the shop's septic tank is a
possible source of soil contamination near the former UST location.
' 2.2 Propane Tank Placement
Suburban Propane of Tracy (Suburban) met with the homeowner and GTI staff at the ST site
on January 19, 2005 to discuss temporary replacement of the propane (LP) tank, which
supplies fuel to the residence. It was determined that a temporary system was not necessary.
The piping for the existing LP tank was long enough to allow the tank to be rotated 900
' placing the LP tank out of the area of excavation.
Suburban mobilized to the site on February 4, 2005 and rotated the LP tank to its new
' position out of the area of proposed excavation.
2.3 Tree Removal
' Del-Tech Geotechnical Support Services (Del-Tech) arrived at the site on February 23, 2005
and removed the eastern most tree from the area of excavation. The tree closest to the former
' UST location was left.in place due to fears the root system may have penetrated the septic,
system and/or field. A stump located near the southeastern corner of the former UST
location was also removed.
1
