23 April 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0100
Page 3 of 7
• Permitting and pre-field work activities;
Soil sample collection and analysis;
• Ground water sample collection and analysis;
Monitoring well installation and sampling; and
• Report preparation.
3.1. -PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
Applicable site assessment permits will be obtained from the PHS-EHD. As required by PHS-EHD
permitting, a health and safety plan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and
Health Guidance Manual for-Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S.: Environmental Protection Agency,
1985). Prior to mobilization, each soil probe location will be clearly marked and an utility clearance
obtained through Underground Service Alert.
3.2. MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION AND SAMPLING
As a result of the groundwater sampling.for thecorrective action, an MTBE.impact to ground water
was detected. Therefore, four ground water monitoring wells will be installed at the site. Proposed
locations for monitoring wells are presented in Figure 2. The first soil boring will be advanced in
the vicinity of the former dispenser. The other soil borings will be established in the apparent down
gradient and cross gradient directions from the MTBE impact.
The proposed monitoring wells will provide repeatable sampling points for the monitoring of
impacts to ground water and allow determination of site-specific ground water flow direction. The
procedures for monitoring well installation and collection-of soil and ground water samples are
presented in Section 4.1. and Section 4.5., respectively.
All borings are proposed to be advanced to approximately 55 feet bsg. Due to the limits of the soil
contamination in the area of the former dispenser area, soil samples will be collected from each
boring at five-foot intervals from a depth of 40 feet bsg to 55 feet bsg..Monitoring well installation
activities are described below.
