1 <br />' 23 April 1999 <br /> • AGE-NC Project No. 95-0100 <br />' Page 3 of 6 <br /> ® EPA Method 8020 for volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene: BTEX <br /> and methyl-tertiary butyl ether: MTBE). <br /> For the confirmation of the MTBE and detection of other fuel additives the grab water sample was <br /> analyzed in accordance with: <br /> • EPA Method 8260 Modified for oxygenated fuel additives: di-isopropyl ether(DIPE), ethyl <br /> I . tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), MTBE, tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) and tertiary amyl methyl <br /> ether(TAME). <br /> 2.4. LOGGING <br /> Soil was extruded from a duplicate sample sleeve and screened for the presence of organic vapor <br /> ' using an organic vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo,-ionization detector (PID: Thermo <br /> Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene), and the readings were recorded on a soil <br /> boring log. The soil was then visually described in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification <br /> ' System(see Appendix A). <br /> ' 3.0. FINDINGS <br /> Shallow subsurface soil profile, as presented on the boring logs and the site stratigraphy,was inferred <br /> ' from the logged soil data. Hydrocarbon and fuel additive impacts on soil and ground water were <br /> determined from analytical results as presented below. <br /> ' 3.1. STRATIGRAPHY <br /> tShallow subsurface soil described from soil boring CB I consisted primarily of silt and clay from <br /> ground surface to approximately 20 feet bsg. A gravel interbedded with sand layer was encountered <br /> from a depth of 20 feet bsg to approximately 40 feet bsg. A clay layer was encountered underlying <br /> the gravel/sand unit at depths of 45 feet bsg to approximately 55 feet bsg. <br /> Shallow subsurface soil described from soil boring CB2 consisted primarily of clay from ground <br /> - _ __: _ ._ ,.__._�._-�_ <br /> surface to approximately 15 feet bsg. A gravel interbedded with sand was encountered from a depth <br /> of 20 feet bsg to approximately 30 feet bsg. A clay layer was encountered underlaying the <br /> ' gravel/sand unit at a depth 35 feet bsg. <br /> • Organic vapor was detected in both of the borings advanced at the site. Soil collected from boring <br /> ' CB 1 at depths of 10 feet to 20 feet bsg had the greatest detectable organic vapor, while soil to a <br /> Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc. <br /> 1 <br />
