Cal f'omia A total of three 10;000-gallon
underground storage tanks that had stored diesel fuel were removed. The work was completed
as described in the July 28, 1992, work.elan_ .itl: the exception that soil samples were
analyzed at Excelchem Environmental' Lacs, a California Department of Health Services
certified Laboratory instead of at WEST.L,abs.. 'Ile work plan is attached in Appendix A.
During the tank removal the Mokela'rone Fire, District and .the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division had represisntatives on-site to. observe the activity. Both
agencies had reviewed and approved the work.plahn prior to initiation of fieldwork.
Figure 1 presents a'sketch of the tank excavation, tank locations and sample locations. Table
1 summarizes laboratory results. Copies of the laboratory reports are presented in Appendix
B. Appendix C presents copies of the Urpform Hazardous Waste Manifests used to manifest
the tanks in transport to the disposal facility.. .
Results
Detectable concentrations of hydrocarbons were identified in the stockpile and in two samples
collected from beneath the tanks. The stockpile samples will be used to assess disposal
options for the stockpile. Final recommendations for disposal of the stockpile will be
presented under separate cover.
The two samples with detectable levels of hydrocarbons that were collected from beneath the
tanks contained xylene in concentrations slightly higher than the detection limit but well below
an unofficial but typical action level in California for xylene in soil of 1 part per million
(ppm). However, sample T-2-1 @ 14 contained concentrations of total petroleum
hydrocarbons-diesel (TPH-D)of 3,100 ppm. Although no action levels have been established
for TPH-D by the State of California, that portion of the excavation will be required to be
remediated by the County of San Joaquin Health Department.
7046\C0RRWP,704&01.1r t
