KLEINFELDER
UA
3 FIELD ACTIVITIES
3.1 DRILLING AND SOIL SAMPLING
4" On September 20 1991, a total of three soil borings were drilled on the property. Locations
of the borings are shown on Plate 2. Boring locations were selected based on site access,
and potential location of underground utilities. Soil borings were advanced with a truck-
mounted drill rig equipped with 6-inch hollow-stem augers as described in Appendix A,
Section A-2. Ground water was encountered at depths varying from 10 to 12.5 feet.
During drilling and sampling activities, an experienced environmental geologist classified
the soil and logged the boreholes. Soil samples were collected for logging as described in
Appendix A, Section A-2. Field observations did not indicate that soil at the site had been
impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons or other chemicals, therefore, soil samples were not
collected for quantitative chemical analysis.
Soil at the site was dominated by fine grained sand or silty sand. At depths of 10 to 12 feet
the sand became coarser and in B-1 and B-2 was medium grained, and in B-3 was coarse
grained. The sand was composed mainly of quartz with some mica. Boring logs are
presented in Appendix B.
LW Because there was no indication that soil at the site was impacted by petroleum
hydrocarbon materials, drill cuttings were discharged to the ground. Upon completion of
. the drilling activities, each boring was backfilled with a cement/bentonite grout. Grouting
was observed by Mike Infurna of San Joaquin County Public Health Services.
3.2 GROUND WATER SAMPLING
Ground water samples were extracted from the bottom of the borings using a BAT Probe.
The BAT Probe consists of a sample extraction tip made of stainless steel. The tip is
- lowered into the boring at the end of a 1.5-inch inside diameter galvanized steel pipe, and
pushed into the soil/aquifer at the bottom of the borings. Samples were collected as
described in Appendix A, Section A-3.
FR25-91-22 Page 3 of 7
Copyright 1991 Meinfelder,Inc.
