1 0 •
' 3.1.2 Adjacent Properties
The area known as the Gleason Park Neighborhood (named for the public park located
immediately north of the Site) has been a middle to lower socio-economic neighborhood
since the early 1900's. The neighborhood is bordered on the south by Mormon Slough
' which flooded several years in a row around the beginning of the 1900's. In 1911,these
floods were contained by a newly constructed diverting canal (Jones and Stokes,2005).
As determined from the Sanborn Fire Maps, the block to the north of the Site on which
Gleason Park is now located was partially filled with residential homes in 1895. By
1917,Lafayette Grammar School had been built in the southeast comer along with
' several new homes. To make way for the school,at least 5 other residential structures
were removed. By 1950,all the houses on the block had been removed except one. The
1972 United States Geological Services Topographical Map labels the school as vacant
and the remaining home on the block is not pictured. The demolition date of the school is
unknown. The city block was vacant and used as a city park until 1995.
' The City of Stockton added public sewers and water mains to the area in the 1910's.
Subsequent use of the windmills and associated water wells and tanks was eliminated
thereafter. The 1917 Sanborn Fire Maps do not show the windmills or associated tanks
' on the maps.
The adjacent properties contain numerous windmills with tanks. See Table 1 below. All
' of these wells are again absent from the 1917 maps. Their current existence or
destruction status is unknown.
Table 2: Adjacent 1895 Prope Water Wells
Sanborn Maps Block# Number of Wells Direction from Site
233 1 Northwest
232 (Gleason Park) 1 North
231 3 Northeast
' 264 1 East
575 0 Southeast
574 0 South
573 0 Southwest
262 5 West
Total 11
' 3.2 Hazardous Substance/Waste Management Information
3.2.1 The Site
A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment(Phase I) was completed by Aperio Inc. titled
' Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, Proposed Spanos Elementary School Site, dated
May 16, 2005 previously submitted to the DTSC.
