c
3.0 Soil Treatment
After placement, the soil will be allowed to aerate to remove the gasoline
contamination from the soil. To expedite this process, the soil will be periodically
turned over. Turning and fluffing the soil will enhance the aeration process by
exposing more surface area of the soil. This will be accomplished by mechanical
discing or ripping the soil with a towed behind farm implement. The soil, will be
turned over on a weekly basis during the aeration period.
4.0 Soil: Screening
During the aeration process, the soil will be monitored to determine the presence
of contamination. The monitoring will consist of both visual inspection and field
screening techniques. A photoionization detector (PID) will be used as a semi-
quantitative field screening method. if the soils on the aeration pad have a
strong organic or chemical odor or display a high organic vapor reading on the
._i
PID (greater than 10 ppm) then they will be considered to still contain
contamination and the weekly soil discing will continue. Soils with these
characteristics are most likely to be contaminated with hydrocarbons.
j 5.0 Soil Sampling
When the soils no longer contain an odor or display PID readings greater than
ppm, then the soil will be analyzed to determe if any hydrocarbon remains
in the soil. A four-into-one composite soil sample will be collected from the
' aeration pad. The soils will be analyzed for TPH gasoline and BTEX.
a
The sample results will be submitted to the San Joaquin County representative
upon receipt. Based on the analytical results and upon the recommendation /
approval of the San Joaquin County representative the soil discing will cease or
discing will continue. Should the analytical results indicate the presence of
contamination, then the soil discing will continue and the soil will be resampled.
This will continue until the contamination has been removed or reduced to a level
acceptable to the San Joaquin County representative. This material will be kept
onsite and used for landscaping needs.
2of2
