PHS/EHD has the following
comments for your consideration.
Two monitoring wells, MW2 and MW3, and a soil boring, CSB-1, were installed in January
1993. The monitoring wells were installed to further assess groundwater contamination and
to determine the groundwater gradient beneath the site. The soil boring was drilled to
evaluate the effectiveness of the vapor extraction system which had been in operation since
April 1992.
PHS/EHD concurs with the recommendation to continue groundwater monitoring and
sampling to confirm that petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants are no longer detectible and
that the groundwater gradient is to the southeast. The next groundwater monitoring event
is scheduled for June 1993. Please provide PHS/EHD 48 hours notification prior to
sampling.
PHS/EHD does not concur with the conclusion that contaminated soils have been adequately
remediated, based on currently. available information. The soil borings used to determine
the lateral extent of soil contamination, BH-1 and BH-2, were drilled approximately 25 feet
from MW1A which was installed in the middle of the former tank pit area. Analytical
results from BH-2 indicated detectible concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons between
20 and 30 feet below ground surface. The soil boring which was used to evaluate the
effectiveness of the vapor extraction treatment system was located within 5 feet of MW1A
and the vapor extraction well, EW-1. The analytical results from CSB-1 do not provide
adequate information to confirm that soil contamination has been fully remediated. Please
submit by June 7, 1993 a work plan to drill additional soil borings to confirm the completion
of remediation.
A Division of San Joaquin County Htalth cart Services
