A
number of topics were discussed including a review of site history and the need and
benefit of additional site characterization. PHS/EHD has prepared a summary of the
meeting for your information.
The former underground storage tanks were not used for a number of years prior to tank
removal. During an estimated period of eight years prior to removal, the tanks had
contained petroleum products, yet when the tanks were removed observations indicated
that petroleum products were no longer contained within. The tanks were removed on
May 22, 1987 and noted to be rusty. A soil sample was collected and the excavation
backfilled to grade with both excavated soil and clean fill. A subsequent re-excavation
occurred on December 13, 1990 and two soil samples were collected, one at 10 feet and
one at 15 feet which confirmed contamination. The excavation was backfilled with the
excavated soil.
Additional assessment of the extent of soil and groundwater contamination began on May
7, 1991 and consisted of four soil borings, one of which was converted into monitoring
well MW 1A. Quarterly monitoring of the well was initiated on May 22, 1991 and has
continued. The next quarterly monitoring event was scheduled for November 12, 1992.
The groundwater gradient of the site is unknown. To determine the groundwater
gradient a minimum of two additional monitoring wells will be necessary. Additional
monitoring wells will also provide information necessary to determine the extent of
groundwater contamination. A survey of wells within 2000 feet should be conducted to
help decide placement of the additional monitoring wells.
A Division of San Jmquin County Htaith Care Services
