i
09 September 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 99-0608
Page 2 of 5
depths.
On 23 June 1999, AGE advanced one soil probe boring at the site. Probe boring BI was advanced
within the former UST excavation to a depth of 23 feet below surface grade (bsg). Samples were
collected in five-foot intervals in the boring.
3.2. SOIL AND GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
Discrete soil samples were collected at 10 and 15 feet bsg using the Geoprobe push-driven
continuous core sampler fitted with a four foot long Teflon sleeve. Soil sample B1-20' at 20 feet bsg
was collected from four six-inch brass sleeves. Soil samples were preserved by covering both ends
of the middle section of the Teflon sleeve and the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets, capping
and sealing with tape. Each preserved sample sleeve was labeled with soil boring location, depth,
time, date and sampler's initials and was stored in a chilled container under ice. Soil encountered in
the borings were visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS). Additionally, soil samples were field screened for the presence of
volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter(OVM). Selected soil samples were logged
on a chain-of-custody, transported to a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-
certified laboratory and analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method GCFID 5030A;
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as diesel (TPH-d) in accordance with EPA Method
5030/8015M;
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as motor oil (TPH-mo) in accordance with EPA
Method 3550/8015M; and
• Volatile aromatics(benzene,toluene,ethyl benzene and xylene: BTEX)with methyl tertiary-
butyI ether (MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8020.
One grab ground water sample was collected from probe boring B1. The samp!-- was collected
utilizing a Geoprobe water sampling assembly fitted with a pre-cleaned one-inch diameter, 0.01-inch
slotted temporary well screen. Each ground water sample was extracted by lowering a Teflon hose
through the center of the screen section. Upon retrieval, the sample was transferred into EPA-
approved 40-m1 VOA vials, containing 0.5 ml 18%hydrochloric acid as a sample preservative. Care
was taken to ensure that visible air bubbles were not present in the VOAs after filling and capping.
The sample for TPH-d and TPH-mo analyses were collected in a laboratory-supplied, 1-liter amber
Adranced Gro Environmental,Inc.
