The Iocation of well VW-1 is presented in
Figure 2.
Soil samples were collected in pre-cleaned brass sleeves at five-foot intervals using a
California modified split spoon sampler. The bottom most intact sample from each
sampling interval was retained for possible laboratory analyses. The ends of each
retained sample were covered with TeflonTM sheets and plastic caps, and placed in an ice-
chilled cooler. Additional soil from each sampling interval was placed in resealable
plastic bags to allow the accumulation of volatile organic carbon (VOC) vapors within
the airspace in the bags. A portable photo-ionization detector (PID) was used to measure
VOC concentrations from each sample in parts per million by volume (ppmv). PID
results are included on the boring logs in Appendix D. PID results were also used to
select soil samples for chemical analyses. Drill cuttings were placed in U.S. D.O.T.
approved 55 gallon drums and stored on site pending disposal.
Well Construction
Vapor extraction well VW-1 was constructed using four-inch diameter, Schedule 40
PVC, with 15 feet of 0.03-inch diameter factory slotted well screen installed from
approximately 20 to 35 feet bgs. A filter pack of medium aquarium sand was placed in
the annular space around the well from the bottom of the well screen to approximately
one foot above the top of the well screen. Two feet of bentonite was placed on top of the
filter pack to provide a sanitary seal for the well. Neat cement was used to backfill the
annular space around the well to surface grade. A traffic rated vault box was placed over
the well.
Soil Analytical Results
Soil samples were analyzed for TPHG using USEPA Method 8015B DHS LUFT
Manual, and for BTEX, MTBE, ETBE, DIPE, TAME, TBA, and 1,2-DCA using USEPA
Method 8260B. Soil Analytical results are presented in Table 3. Certified analytical
results with chain-of-custody documentation is included in Appendix C. TPHG and
BTEX were detected in soil samples collected from 25, 30, and 35 feet bgs in boring
VW-1.
SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION SYSTEM
Stratus operated and maintained the SVES during second quarter 2001, under an
authority to construct (ATC) issued by the SJVUAPCD. The system startup was
conducted on August 15, 2000. The SVES consists of a 150 cubic feet per minute
catalytic oxidizer with a 5 horsepower blower. Soil vapors are extracted from the
subsurface by the blower and abated in a catalytic oxidizer before discharge to the
CAProject Files%USA Gasoline100651Qtfly1USA 0065 2QW Report.doc SrRATU5
