Mr. Ron Rowe
C A M B R I A December 18, 1998
levels, on observations of staining and odor, and on the results of field screening with a portable
vapor analyzer. Our standard sampling protocol is described in Attachment A.
At a minimum, three soil samples from each of the well`borings will be analyzed: one each from
the historically lowest ground water level (35 feet bgs), the highest ground water level (5 feet
bgs), and the capillary fringe(expected to be approximately 20 feet bgs).
One soil sample from each distinct lithologic unit across the site that has not been previously
encountered will be preserved for physical analyses. For each sample that will be used for
physical analyses, Cambria will attempt to preserve two brass tubes, each 6 inches in length by
2 inches in diameter. Soil observed to contain hydrocarbons will not be used for physical
analyses.
Ground Water Sampling: For each of the CPT borings, Cambria will collect discrete ground
water samples at five ft intervals at and below the water table using either a Hydropunch®
sampler for water samples only, or a MicroProbe® sampler (2" diameter version of the
Simulprobe®)if ground water and soil samples need to be taken simultaneously.
Chemical Analysis: The soil and ground water samples will be analyzed for TPHg, benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes, (BTEX) by EPA Methods 8015/8020 at a California
certified laboratory. The samples will also be analyzed for oxygenated fuel additives Methyl
tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE), Tertiary Amyl Methyl Ether (TAME), di-Isopropyl Ether (DIPE),
Ethyl tert-Butyl Ether (ETBE), tert-Butanol, and ethanol using EPA Method 8260. Methanol
will be analyzed by EPA Method 8015 (modified).. Proposed detection limits for the
oxygenated fuel chemical compounds in water are as follows: MTBE - 5 pg/L, TAME- 5 µg2,
DIPE - 5 µg/L, ETBE - 5 pg/L, tert-Butanol - 100 gg/L, ethanol - 500 Vg/l-, and methanol —
1 mg/L. Proposed detection limits for the oxygenated fuel chemical compounds in soil are as
follows: MTBE - 0.1 mg/kg; TAME - 0.1 mg/kg, DIPS - 0.1 mg/kg, ETBE - 0.1 mg/kg, tert-
Butanol -5,0 mg/kg,ethanol -25 mg/kg, and methanol- 1.0 mg/kg.
Ground Water Aquifer Testing: Cambria will perform an aquifer pumping test on proposed
well MW-3. The aquifer pumping test will run for a total of approximately 12 hours. Ground
water will be extracted at a constant flow rate via an electric submersible pump. Drawdown in
the recovery well and surrounding wells will be taken periodically. Water extracted from the
well will be stored onsite for disposal. A ground water sample will be collected at the
beginning, middle, and end of the test and analyzed as.above.
3
