A surface seal will be achieved by
pumping a neat cement grout (augmented with < 4% bentonite) through the hollow stem
. augers as they are withdrawn. The wells will be secured with locking watertight caps
encased in flush mounted traffic rated well boxes.
-r 4.2 Equipment
The equipment to be utilized for the test includes:
• A blower for injecting air into the well(s).
• Hoses and/or PVC piping for connecting blower to the individual wells.
• Magnehelic gauges for measuring well head pressure/vacuum.
• Manual meters for measuring 02, CO2, and VOCs.
• Manual meter for measuring air speed.
r
4.3 Bioventing Test
.. Note: GTI utilized a government publication for guidance in developing the following test
procedures- "Procedures for Conducting Bioventing Pilot Tests and Long-Term
Monitoring of Bioventing Systems", prepared for the Air Force Center for Environmental
Excellence, Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, by Parsons, 1700 Broadway, Suite
900, Denver, Colorado, 80290, May 2004. The document summarizes lessons learned from
145 bioventing remediation projects conducted at 56 Air Force installations.
On line at:
http://clu-in.orgltechfocusldefault focuslsec/Bioventing%252FBiospargingleat/Guidance/
Baseline oxygen (02), carbon dioxide (CO2), and VOC concentrations in the test wells will
be obtained prior to starting the test. (note: the CO2 will only be monitored if a cost effective d
.. hand held monitor can be procured for the test) This will be accomplished by calculating the
ambient air volume present in the well and then using a vacuum pump to purge three well 4v0s
_ volumes from the well. When this has been accomplished the vapor drawn from the well will
be pumped in to a tedlar bag and then hand meters will be used to check the 02 M, CO2 M
and VOCs (ppm) concentrations in the bag.
The pilot test will start with air injection into the shallow well IW-l. This will test the sandy
layer at 40 - 45 feet bgs and a fast pneumatic response is anticipated due to the layer's higher
permeability. The above parameters in addition to injection airspeed and wellhead
vacuum/pressure will be measured at one-hour intervals in all monitoring points (extraction
wells). If no influence is detected, then the sampling interval will be extended as conditions
warrant.
ftw
r
