PHS/EHD has prepared a summary of recent events
compiling information which was provided by your subcontractors:WHF,Semco and Sparger
Technology.
On June 15, 1993, two underground storage tanks were removed, one 12,000 gallon gasoline
tank and one 12,000 gallon diesel tank. Soil contamination was evidenced at 19 feet below
ground surface (bgs).
Excavation of contaminated soil was initiated on July 7, 1993 and continued until July 12,
1993. The dimensions of the excavation were extended to approximately 50 feet by 70 feet
to approximate depths of 16-23 feet bgs.
An estimated 1,600 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed from the excavation and
is currently stockpiled on site underlain and overlain by plastic, awaiting treatment. The
overburdened soil, approximately 250 cubic yards, which was sampled and analyzed with no
contaminants detected, was used along with 1,200 cubic yards of pea gravel as backfill. The
excavation was backfilled and asphalted to grade.
Residual soil contamination was evidenced at 16 feet bgs of up to 24,000 ppb benzene,
120,000 ppb toluene, 120,000 ppb ethylbenzene, 19,000 ppb toluene, and 1,100 ppm TPH-
gasoline. Please note, Table 1 did not include the benzene, 23 ppb, detected in WE3-16.
Groundwater contamination was evidenced in the water sample collected from the
excavation of 140 ppb benzene, 97 ppb toluene, 5 ppb ethylbenzene, 240 ppb xylene and 1.8
ppm TPH-gasoline. The 4,000 gallons of groundwater which was removed from the
excavation was sampled and no contaminants were detected. This groundwater was
subsequently used on site as a dust suppressant.
A Dimion of San Joaquin County Health Clue xrnces \
