December 11, 1991
Beacon Service Station No. 492, Manteca, California
Drilling Procedures
Before drillin?,we will acquire a permit from the SJCPHS-EHD for drilling one soil boring.
RESNA will contact Underground Service Alert at least 48 hours before drilling to delineate
public utility lines at the site. Before drilling, we will hand a.iger each borehole to 3 to 5
feet below grade.
We will observe a licensed well driller drill one 10-inch-diameter soil boring as shown on
Plate 2. A truck-mounted rig equipped with hollow-stem augers will be used. The drilling
will be performed under tl:e guidance of a field geologist. The earth materials will be
identified using visual and manual methods, and classified according to the Unified Soil
Classification System as drilling progresses. A PID will be used to evaluate soil satrapies for
gasoline hydrocarbons. Field instruments such as the PID are useful for indicating relative y
hydrocarbon vapors but do not detect the concentration of gasoline
levels of gasoline
hydrocarbons present with the same precision as laboratory analyses. Subjective evidence
of gasoline hydrocarbons such as soil discoloration or obvious odor will be noted.
_Co lletting_Soil Samples
During drilling, soil samples will be collected at 5-foot or rther appropriate intervals using
a California-modified,split-spoon sampler equipped with clean brass sleeves. Samples will
be collected by drilling the boring to a point just above the sampling depth and then driving
the sampler into the soil through the hollow center of the auger. The sampler will be dri'en
18 inches with a standard 1.40-pound hammer dropped 30 inches. The number of blows
required to drive the sampler each successive 6-inch interval will be counted and recorded
on the field boring log to give an indication of soil consistency. Soil samples will be
collected, identified, and evaluated for relative levels of gasoline hydrocarbons using a PID
when appropriate.
86102-7W - -.
