After the subsequent
repair, the tank passed precision tests and no further problems were reported. In 1989, three angle soil borings
were drilled and three soil samples were obtained from beneath the tank. The results of the soil sampling
indicated that residual levels of contamination were present below the westem end of the tank. The soil sample
results from the middle and eastern end of the tank did not show contamination.
Based on this data, PHS/EHD assumed a very conservative area of possible impact and calculated an estimated
residual volume of hydrocarbons remaining. Assuming an area of 64,000 cubic feet, a bulk density for silty clay
soil of 120 pounds per cubic foot, and 0.009 parts per million average benzene concentration, the volume of
benzene estimated to remain is 0.069 pounds. Assuming the same parameters but using an average toluene
concentration of 0.021 parts per million, the volume of toluene estimated to remain is 0.161 pounds. Seasonal
high groundwater is for this area is 105 feet below ground surface, approximately 75 feet below this area of
residual contamination. The total cumulative hydrocarbons estimated in this area is 0.023 pounds or 0.038
gallons.
Therefore, PHS/EHD has determined that no further action at this site will effectively protect groundwater, now
and in the future.
A Case Closure Summary and a site chronology are enclosed for your reference. Unless otherwise notified by
you, after thirty business days PHS/Ei-iD will issue a formal closure letter to the responsible party.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss this site in more detail, please contact Linda Turkatte, Senior RENS
at (209) 468-3441. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
4 C
Linda Turkatte, Senior REHS Die .
