the sand. The remaining portion of the well was filled with a
( concrete grout seal and a manhole well cover installed. A
locking cap with lock was placed in the casing to avoid surface
contamination to groundwater.
There are 5 Monitoring Wells on site. The location of the wells
and boring B-1 is shown in Figure 2 .
SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples were collected at approximately five foot intervals
commencing at ten feet using a split spoon tube sampler loaded
with pre-cleaned brass tubes. The sampling equipment was
decontaminated using, tri-sodium phosphate solution (TSP) and
twice rinsed with the last rinse using distilled water prior to
sampling.
Soil samples were collected in the lowest brass liner and
preserved by covering both ends with Teflon tape and capped with
plastic caps. The soil samples were labeled and logged under
Chain-of-Custody (COC) control_ They were stored in a cooler
with ice, transported to a state certified laboratory for
analysis with COC documentation.
The soil samples were labeled as to boring number and depth, i.e.
the soil sample collected from MW-I at the 5 foot level was
marked B-1 51 . The soil samples with PID readings above
background were analyzed.
The soil cuttings were stored on and covered with visqueen
awaiting the results of the soil analysis.
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
On August 30, 2000, Michael Dzugaj and John P. Cummings of JPCA
went to the site to collect groundwater samples. Carol Oz, Sr
REHS, SJCEHD inspector was also on site. The new wells need to
have more grout placed in the bore holes. The grout seals had
settled up to 6 feet, not uncommon in deeper wells with
significant sand in the zone to be grouted.
The wells were purged by bailing, by hand, with a clean dedicated
PVC bailer for each well . After the bailing, and prior to
collecting groundwater samples, the depth to water in the wells
was remeasured, as required by the SJCEHD inspector.
The purged groundwater was placed a in 55-gallon drum labeled
4
