Pressure response and DO data suggests a
radius of influence greater than 20 feet.
8.0 REMEDIATION ALTERNATIVES
Remediation alternatives are selected on the basis of remediation goals evaluated, in part, by
the present and potential future uses of the groundwater resource at the site and the potential
threat posed by the impact to human health and the environment. The ideal remediation goal
would be to reduce constituents to non-detectable concentrations. As in most cases, this
goal is not economically or technically feasible, or necessary to protect human health and the
environment.
8.1 Soil Remediation Alternatives
• The following soil remediation alternatives are discussed in this section:
• Passive Remediation
• Soil Vapor Extraction
• Excavation and Disposal
• Excavation and Aboveground Treatment
81.1 Passive Remediation
Passive remediation is an alternative in which petroleum hydrocarbons are not actively
removed and natural attenuation processes are allowed to proceed resulting in the reduction
and dissipation of petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations the soil and groundwater
environments. Processes of natural attenuation include dispersion, volatilization, adsorption,
aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation.
474PARCAP3-02.doc 13
Project No. 1474.23 HORIZON ENVIRONMENTAL INC.
