grained soils any hydrocarbons may have migrated vertically instead of laterally. The lateral
+jam limit of hydrocarbon migration appears to be limited.
5.0 Soil Remediation Proposal
L
5.1 Tank Removal Activities
IT Corporation was retained by BP Oil Company to generate a Soil Remediation Plan and
provide environmental support during the removal/replacement of four underground storage
tanks at BP Station No. 11190. The construction activities will be executed by
representatives of Paradiso Construction, as agents of BP Oil, and are planned to begin
sometime in early fall 1991. During construction, the tanks, dispensers, associated piping and
all imported fill material (surrounding the tanks) will be excavated. Detailed tank removal
procedures will be addressed under separate cover. y T
K't c
During excavation procedures, IT field personnel will screen the removed soils for the
presence of volatile organic compounds using a photoionization detector. Excavated soils wll
be stockpiled on sheets of visqueen pending waste characterization. Soil disposal is discussed
in Section 5.3.
5.2 Soil Sampling
As established by the Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and
j Investigation of Underground Tanks, two native soil samples will be collected from beneath
L tanks with volumes of 1,000 to 10,000 gallons (tanks 2, 3 and 5). Three native soil samples
will collected from beneath tanks with volumes greater than 10,000 gallons (tank 1).
Additionally, one soil sample will be collected from beneath every twenty lineal feet of
associated piping. Soil samples will be collected from the excavation following removal of
Lthe fill material. The soil samples will be collected using a decontaminated brass sleeve
inserted in a split spoon sampler. The sampler will be driven into the native soils using an
attached slide hammer. In the event that sampling locations cannot be reached safely from
outside the excavation, a backhoe will be used to bring soil to the ground surface for
Lsampling. The outer two inches of disturbed soil will be removed and the sampler will be
driven into the soil in the backhoe bucket.
L
MA/8-12-91/ENG/9284MER 5
