INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION
2.3 Former 011/Water Separator
2.3.1 Oil/Water Separator Removal and Disposal
The contents of the separator were removed by H & H Ship Service on November 21, 1991
and transported (under manifest #91507367) to their facility in San Francisco for disposal.
The separator was then removed by Paradiso Construction representatives. County
environmental health specialist Steven Schneider was on site to witness the removal.
— Following separator removal, underlying soils were examined by the IT field representative.
No product stain, petroleum odor or groundwater were encountered in the excavation. The
separator was transported by H & H (under manifest #91507405) to their San Francisco
facility for disposal. Copies of the manifests for the separator and its contents are included in
Appendix I.
2.3.2 Verification Soil Sampling - 011/Water Separator
One soil sample (112191SS-1) was collected from the excavation bottom, at an approximate
depth of 6.0 feet below grade. Since the excavation could not be entered safely, the backhoe
bucket was used to bring soils, from the desired sampling location, to the ground surface.
The sample was collected from the backhoe bucket using a decontaminated brass sleeve,
inserted in a split spoon sampler. The sampler was driven into the soil by using a detachable
slide hammer.
Upon sample extraction, sample tube ends were immediately sealed with teflon lined plastic
end caps to prevent the loss of volatile compounds. The sample was placed in a zip-loc bag,
stored in a refrigerated ice chest and transported under chain of custody control to Precision
Analytical Laboratory for analysis. The sample was analyzed by the same methods defined in
Section 2.1.2 and, upon analysis, detectable petroleum hydrocarbons were found.
— Limited over excavation, recommended by San Joaquin County representatives, was
conducted November 26, 1991 by Paradiso Construction. Verification samples were collected
by an IT Corporation representative following the stockpiling of excavated soils (Appendix
D.) Soil samples were collected from the excavation comers (112691SS1, 112691SS2,
112691SS3, and 112691SS4), at a depth of 8.5 feet below grade. A subsequent soil sample
from the pit bottom (120291 SS 1) was collected on December 2, 1991.
2.3.3 Soil Stockpile Sampling - O11/Water Separator
Soils excavated during removal of the oil/water separator on November 21, and over
excavation on November 26, 1991 were stockpiled for future disposal.
