Mike Infurna [EH] !
From: Joseph Zilles Ozilles@kleinfelder.com]
Sent: Wednesday, August 13, 2003 12:32 PM
To: Mike Infurna [EH]
Subject: Re: 1444 Mariposa-Septic system
Mike I understand you will be out today 8/13 and tomorrow 8/14 and possibly friday
8/15. As we discussed yesterday over the phone, I proceeded with the initial steps of
uncovering, pot holing, and collecting soil samples along the leach line, seepage pit and
tank. This is how it went.
I was successful in uncovering the rubber transition flange from the tank to the line. I
recovered soil samples from 24 and 36 inches bgs. There was no odor, staining, or
sludge leakage near the flange. I potholed every 20 feet and did the same. Again no
odor, staining, or sludge noticed along leach line. Heres where the field observations
strayed from the workplan. The leach line only extended a total of 45 feet off of the
tank
(versus 90 feet as the permit showed) , so the shortage eliminated 3 sample locations.
My last sample along the line was advanced at the end where the leach line transitioned
into a seepage sump with pea gravel. There was no seepage pit in the traditional sense
noticed. Again no odor, staining, or sludge at the end of the line. In fact it looked
quite
clean all along the exposures we created. My final excavation was advanced on the
south side of the tank. We dug to 6 inches and 18 inches below the tank. I was unable
to collect a sample from below. the tank on the north end due to the proximity of the
leach line and the probability of damaging it.
I would like to request to deviate from the workplan in collecting a north side sample
unless gross contamination is noted upon the removal of the tank. I added an 8260B
rpt all peaks analysis to the list as requested. I expect results by the mid next week. I
know you wanted to view the excavations made, but in light of liabilities I opted to
backfill them.
