CITY OF STOCKTON
OOA
A;V
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
CITY HALL
STOCKTON, CA 95202-1997
San Joaquin County Health District ENVlRpOE,
1601 E. Hazelton FER1011-ISERVCSLTy
Stockton, Ca
UNLEADED FUEL TANK LOCATED AT STOCKTON'S POLICE DEPARTMENT
We have complied with your directive to stop operation of the unleaded
tank system as of June 28, 1988. However, I would like to request
that Stockton Service Station be allowed to replace the leaking vapor
recovery line, eliminating any further contamination of the site. This
would be a temporary repair to keep the Police Facility in operation
until the site evaluation is completed and the cleanup process is started.
This should be no longer than three to four months.
The Stockton Police Department is a twenty-four hour operation with a
total fleet of 190 vehicles. In a normal twenty-four hour period
approximately 700 gallons of regular unleaded fuel is dispensed. The
majority of vehicles are serviced between 0630 a.m. thru 12 midnight.
The vehicles include patrol units, investigation units (narcotics, juvenile,
and detective) , administrative vehicles, and special vehicles (swat team van,
strike van, etc.) . The closing of our unleaded gas pump for an extended
period, especially over weekends and holidays, would not only cause a
major inconvenience but would delay the patrol officer's ability to begin
his/her shift and would increase our response time to emergency calls,
especially during shift changes.
Also, our ability to service our vehicles, especially patrol units, at the
Police Facility allows our north beat units to reach their assigned area
via I-5 within minutes. With the 4th of July this weekend and increased
outdoor activities during the summer it would be extremely disruptive to
have our vehicles travel from one to five miles to obtain fuel from
another City site. With the exception of the City Corporation Yard, none
of the other sites have adequate amounts of fuel to meet our needs. The
Corporation Yard which has a 12,000 gallon unleaded fuel tank also has a
high useage factor. This only increases the amount of response time to
emergency calls.
Your cooperation in this matter would be appreciated and affects the
safety and operation of the City of Stockton.
GERALD CATES
ASSISTANT FLEET MANAGER
GC:tw
"STOCKTON...CALIFORNIA'S SUNRISE SEAPORT"
