Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
2 FIELD INVESTIGATION
The field investigation included the following activities
21 Prefield Activities
The City of Stockton obtained access agreements with the appropriate property owners for
the work conducted onsite For the drilling activities performed in the street, the City of
Stockton obtained an encroachment permit Kennedy/Jenks also obtained the necessary
drilling permits from the Agency prior to starting the field activities The access
agreements, encroachment permit, drilling permit and associated forms were submitted to
' the Agency along with the Work Plan on 10 September 1996 These agreements and
permits are presented in Appendix B
Underground Services Alert (USA) was contacted prior to the start of work to mark the
locations of subsurface utilities in the vicinity of and entering the Site Subdynamic
Locating Services (Subdynamic) of San Jose, California, a utility locating firm, searched for
' buried utilities or obstacles at each of the sampling locations Subdynamic also performed
geophysical surveys in the vicinity of each of the former USTs and sumps These surveys
are described in Section 2 2 1
22 Field Investigation
2 2 1 Geophysical Survey
On 24 September 1996, Subdynamics performed geophysical surveys to identify the
presence of three USTs and associated subsurface piping identified in the Phase I ESA
Subdynamics used magnetics and induced electromagnetics to locate the Cunningham
Hotel UST and the two American Street USTs
The surveys identified the location of the Cunningham Hotel UST and two subsurface
' anomalies with dimensions of approximately 7 feet by 7 feet located approximately 15 feet
apart in the area of the American Street USTs, indicating that the two USTs are still
present The geophysical surveys did not locate any pipes associated with the three USTs
In addition, on 24 September 1996, a fill port to the Cunningham Hotel UST was opened,
and fuel oil (probably heating oil) was measured in the UST at a depth of approximately
4 feet bgs The size of the UST is unknown
2 2 2 Subsurface Soil Sampling
Eight Soil Bonngs (SB-1 through SB-7, and SB-11) were drilled to collect discrete soil
samples for chemical analysis The soil samples were collected in accordance with the
procedures presented in the Work Plan The boring logs for Soil Borings SB-1 through
SB-7, and SB-11 are presented in Appendix C The locations of each of the soil borings
are shown on Figure 1
Each of the following soil bonngs were installed to assess the subsurface soil conditions in
the immediate vicinity of each of the areas identified in the ESA The purpose of each
boring is described below
' i yob196r966070 001phase Atext doc 3
