Production Operators, Inc (POI) has prepared this work plan for the K-3 and K-
4 gas compressor area of Pacific Gas and Electric's (PG&E) McDonald Island
Gas Storage Facility located near Stockton, California Figure 1 shows the
location of the McDonald Island Facility The purpose of the proposed work is
to define the vertical extent of chemical impact to the soil and the potential for
chemical impact to the ground water due to Poi's operation of the K-3 and K-4
compressors
rSite Background
fPOI operated the two compressors at the McDonald Island Facility for
approximately eight years During this time, various oils, antifreeze, and
solvents were used for the operation and maintenance of the compressors
These materials were stored in a hazardous material storage area located in
the northeastern corner of the site Figure 2 shows the location of the former
gas compressors (K-3 and K-4) and the former hazardous material storage
area
Two previous field sampling events have occurred at the McDonald Island
facility The first occurred during the removal of the gas compressors PG&E's
Technical and Ecological Services (TES) collected thirteen shallow soil
samples at thirteen locations around the compressor pads and in the vicinity of
the hazardous storage area (TES, December 1996) In addition, two deeper
soil samples (8 and 11 5 feet below surface grade (bsg)) were collected from
Location #1(Figure 3) The soil samples collected were analyzed for
purgeable and extractable Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) by EPA
Method 8015M, Benzene, Toluene, Ethlybenzene, Xylene (BTEX) by EPA
Method 8015M, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by EPA Method 8240,
' and glycol by EPA Method 8015M The results of these analyses are presented
in Table 1, sample locations are presented on Figure 3 (TES, December 1996)
The analytical results indicated chemical impact in the areas around the former
compressor pads and the hazardous material storage area
Page 1
r
