f r
Section 1
INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of a subsurface soil investigation at PG&E's McDonald Island Gas
Storage Facility near Stockton, California("the McDonald Island facility") The location of the
' McDonald Island facility is shown on Figure 1 Productions Operators Inc (POI)operated two gas
compressors at the McDonald Island facility, and this report presents the results of soil testing completed
' following their removal This report was prepared by PG&E's Technological and Ecological Services
(TES) in San Ramon, California
The purpose of this investigation was to determine if shallow soil had been impacted by POI'S
compressor operations Results of this investigation will be used by POI to formulate a plan to further
delineate the extent of contamination and to work with local oversight agencies to remediate as needed to
' obtain approval for"no further action " The remainder of this report presents background regarding the
site, the results-of testing, and the methods used during the soil investigation
SITE BACKGROUND
A site plan of POI's compressor operating area is shown on Figure 2 Two gas compressors, designated
K3 and K4,were used to compress natural gas for infection and storage in subsurface reservoirs The
Cm
mctopressors were operated for approximately eight years and were removed during September and
Ober 1996 because they were no longer needed The compressors resided within secondary
containment structures which appeared to be in good condition prior to removal The containment
' structures beneath the compressors, and subsurface pipes which serviced the compressors, also were
removed The structural concrete pads beneath the compressors were left in place A hazardous
materials storage area with a secondary containment was located in the northeastern corner of the
compressor yard In this area,POI stored bulk quantities of oils, antifreeze, degreasers, and solvents
POI provided the Material Safety Data Sheets(MSDS)for these materials which are presented in
Appendix A
1
96175612774MDIks173w i-1
