i
16 Section 3
RESULTS
This section presents the results of soil testing at the K3 and K4 compressors that were operated by POI
The test results are presented in Table 1 and are summarized below Laboratory reports are presented in
Appendix C
SITE HYDROGEOLOGY
The surface of the site is covered with several inches of crushed rock gravel At sample location 1,the
water table was observed to be approximately 14 ft deep Subsurface soil observed at this location was
predominately poorly-graded, fine-to medium-grained sand(SP)and silty sand(SM)throughout the
boring
' PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS
As shown in Table 1, extractable petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the motor oil, diesel and
kerosene ranges The motor-oil range petroleum hydrocarbons likely originated from the compressor
oils used at K3 and K4 No gasoline-range hydrocarbons or benzene were detected As shown in
Table 3-1, a number of samples had TPH concentrations in the range of thousands of milligrams per
kilogram(mg/kg)
' VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOCs)
Acetone was detected in a number of samples, with a maximum concentration of 0 93 mg/kg in
sample 12 collected from soil near the sump of the former hazardous materials storage area Sample 12
also contained methyl ethyl ketone at 0 18 mg/kg, and methyl isobutyl ketone at 0 17 mg/kg, as well as
' the highest concentrations of toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes detected Acetone, toluene,
I
ethylbenzene, and xylenes also were detected at relatively low levels in samples 13 and 14, located in the
former hazardous materials storage area Acetone, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were not detected in other
samples or were at relatively low concentrations It should also be noted that TES personnel noted a
sweet solvent odor in soil in the area of the hazardous material storage area No other VOCs were
detected
96175612774MD1ks173w 3-1
