APPENDIX A
,DRILLING AND SAMPLING PROTOCOL
DRILLING
Prier to ariy drilling or excavation activities,
Underground Service Alert (USA) will be contacted to mark a l l
underground utility lines in the vicinity of the proposed
work. All necessary permits will be obtained and 48 hour
notification to ,the lead agency will be given prior to the
commencement of jdri i 1 ing.
Borings wil''1 be drilled using hollow-stern auger with no
less than 3 1/4 'inch diameter, (ID) and 6 3/4 outside diameter
(OD) . All drilling equipment will be thoroughly steam-
cleaned before drilling begins to prevent the introduction of
contamination from off-site, and between borings to prevent
cross-contamination.
All borings will be lagged by a qualified geologist
using the Unified Sail Classification System. The color,
texture, rnaisture, plasticity (if applicable) , - consistency,
pertinent soils ;or bedrock characteristics, and arty evidence
of contamination will be noted on the logs. All water-
bearing zones and the depths at which they were encountered
will be noted on the logs. All lags will be reviewed by a
California State; Registered Civil Engineer, Engineering
Geologist or Geologist and verified correct. A sample of the
material logged 'is to be collected and retained for further
analysis and verification.
The borings' will be drilled in such a manner as to
prevent crass-contamination between strata. Exploratory sail
borings will be backfilled with a nine sack sand/cernent
slurry.
., The cutting's from the drilling operation will be
containerized in plastic 55-gallon drums and stored
on-site
for later treatment and/or disposal. The treatment/disposal
will remain the responsibility of the client unless other
arrangements have been made. It is intended that the
contaminated cuttings be incorporated into the soil treatment
program and abandoned in place after treatment.
SAMPLE HANDLING
I
All Sall and groundwater samples will be properly
labeled with project number, date collected, and sample
identification number. All samples will be handled using
standard Chain of Custody procedures. Field records will 7
document the above information and other significant data,
