' On April 28, 2008, we submitted our Soil Vapor Extraction Pilot Test and First Quarter — 2009
Groundwater Monitoring and Progress Report in which we concluded that a full-scale SVE system is
not warranted and that no additional soil vapor investigation activities are needed for the Site.
Additionally, we recommended that each of the existing SVE wells with the exception of VX-1 be
' appropriately destroyed.
1.2 Purpose
' The purpose of the OS pilot test was to evaluate this technology as an applicable remedy for the
' dissolved petroleum hydrocarbon impacts in the groundwater beneath the Site.
2.0 AS/OS PILOT TEST
' This section presents the investigative methods for the pre-field and field activities associated with the
AS/OS activities.
' 2.1 Pre-field Activities
• We prepared the Workplan dated October 13, 2008, describing the proposed scope of.services and
quality assurance/quality control(QA/QC)sampling and laboratory procedures.
• We retained the services of Pacific Gas and Electric Company to set up and supply electrical power
' to the Site.
• We retained the services of H2O Engineering located in San Luis Obispo, California, to provide
sparge points and the AS/OS unit.
' • We retained the services of Moore Twining Associates, Inc. (MTL), a California-certified analytical
laboratory (#1371) located in Fresno, California to perform volatile organic compound (VOC)
analysis of the collected groundwater samples.
• We retained the services of BSK Analytical Laboratories (BSK), a California-certified analytical
laboratory (#1180) located in Fresno, California, to perform low level bromate analyses of the
' collected groundwater samples.
• We retained the services of California Laboratory Services (CLS), a California-certified analytical
' laboratory (#1233) located in Rancho Cordova, California, to perform hexavalent chromium(CrVI)
analyses of the collected groundwater samples.
' 2.2 System Details and AS Activities
The AS/OS groundwater remediation system (OS System) consisted of an H2O Engineering Model
' No. OSU20-52 [3.8 cubic feet per minute (cfm), 110 volts, 30 amps]. The OS System cabinet was
temporarily placed in the former SVE compound within a protected enclosure. We used existing
sparge wells AS-1 through AS-5 for the pilot testing activities. Sparge wells AS-1 through AS-5 are
each 2-inch-diameter Schedule 40 PVC wells ranging in depth from 54 to 57 feet with approximate
3-foot screen sections at the bottom of the wells. We installed an H2O Engineering 1 V2 —diameter by
18-inch-long In-Situ Oxidation point within each of the sparge wells to facilitate the ozone injection.
Project No.59183-06-02 -3 - July 2,2009
