Project No. 034-17016
Site-Specific Health& Safety Plan
Page No. 21
excavation and sampling activities will be conducted in outdoor open spaces. However, there are certain
components, primarily benzene vapors that present significant toxicological hazards and must be properly
controlled.
In addition to inhalation exposure pathways, because exposure pathways to workers from target COCl may
involve dermal exposure, ingestion and contact with the eyes, these hazards will be controlled by proper use
of PPE(gloves, safety glasses, footwear, clothing)during drilling, sample collection and sample packaging
activities as deemed necessary by the on-site Safety Task Leader and personal hygiene practices including
thorough hand washing as well as the designation of a clean area for eating and drinking.
4.2 Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs)
Based upon the historical uses of the subject site,it is possible that on-site activities which utilized hazardous
materials would have primarily been associated with cleaning parts and equipment. Therefore, the potential
storage, use and disposal of VOCs and has been discussed resulting in proposed soil and soil vapor
investigation for these COCl. Typical constituents may have included solvents such as TCE and PCE related
to cleaning, lubrication and insulation fluids, and fuels. However, because exposure pathways to workers
from these COCs may involve dermal exposure, ingestion and contact with the eyes, these hazards will be
controlled by proper use of PPE(gloves, safety glasses, footwear, clothing)during drilling, sample collection
and sample packaging activities as deemed necessary by the on-site Safety Task Leader and personal hygiene
practices including thorough hand washing as well as the designation of a clean area for eating and drinking.
Drilling and sampling activities will be conducted in outdoor open spaces and/or well ventilated service bays.
However, as a safety measure to monitor the potential hazard of exposure to elevated concentrations of
methane gas or other hazardous atmospheres to on-site workers, the work area where potential sampling
and/or trenching are conducted will be monitored with an approved combustible gas meter and a PID to detect
the presence of potentially harmful flammable atmospheres.
4.3 Metals
Because exposure pathways to workers from metals in soil may involve dermal exposure, ingestion and
contact with the eyes, these hazards will be controlled by proper use of PPE(gloves, safety glasses, footwear,
clothing)during earthwork activities, sample collection and sample packaging activities as deemed necessary
by the on-site Safety Task Leader and personal hygiene practices should be instituted including thorough
hand washing as well as the designation of a clean area for eating and drinking.
KRAZAN&ASSOCIATES,INC.
With Offices Serving the Western United States
03417016 SSI Ladvop HASP Final.doc
