ESA
Ms.Margaret Lagorio
June 29,2005
Page 2
Over-drilling the monitoring well borings and removal of the well construction materials generated soil
cuttings containing sand, pulverized PVC well debris and bentonite fragments. As each monitoring well was
drilled out, these materials were placed into a 55-gallon storage drums for temporary storage. This project
required a total of seven drums(shown in attached photographs). ESA collected a composite soil sample
from each drum and submitted them to McCampbell Analytical,Inc. for analysis of total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline,MTBE,benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene(BTEX). The laboratory
results of the seven soil samples did not indicate detectable concentrations of petroleum,MTBE,or BTEX.
Please refer to analytical laboratory reports attached to this letter. These results are consistent with the results
of soil analyses, performed during the monitoring well installation in 2001, which did not detect gasoline,
MTBE,or BTEX. Based on the analytical results of the soil cuttings,ESA recommends that UOP use the
soil cuttings as fill material where needed elsewhere on the campus. However, because of the considerable
amounts of clay, silt and other material, these soil cuttings may not be suitable for topsoil intended to support
vegetation in planter boxes.
I
As stated in the October 18, 2004 SJCEHD letter,UOP is required to provide certification in writing that all
record fee title owners have been notified of the request for site closure. According to Mr. Scott Heaton of
UOP, the University sent a'letter complying with this request to the SJCEHD offices on October 19, 2004.
Please contact us immediately if this letter is not currently in your files.
Since the well destruction activities are complete,we trust that it will be possible to issue the NEAR letter
concerning this case. Again, we appreciate your attention to this project, your cooperation throughout the
assessment process, and your assistance in obtaining case closure. Please contact me with questions or if
you require any additional information.
I
Ji
/B.
on, P.G., C.E.G.
Senior Geologist
Attachments: Site Field Photographs
ii Analytical Reports,McCampbell Analytical, Inc.
I
cc: Victoria McCartney, REHS, SJCEHD
( Joe Kirim,UOP
} Scott Heaton,UOP
John Forsythe,ESA
I
{
i
j
