Consider oxygen monitor for
prolonged use or for storage areas.
If skin comes into contact with cryogen:
Run the area under cool or warm water for 15 minutes; never hot or cold water.
Do not rub burned area.
Seek medical attention.
PYROPHORIC SAFETY
Pyrophoric materials: Substances that ignite instantly upon exposure to
atmospheric oxygen and/or water vapor.
PPE:
Minimum PPE as described previously.
Wear lab coat made from materials not easily ignited (100% cotton or Nomex8).
Avoid wearing synthetic clothing underneath if possible.
Consider use of FR gloves (in addition to nitrite gloves) for handling.
Storage and Handling:
Store under inert gas or kerosene as appropriate.
Avoid storing in areas with heat, flames, oxidizers, or water sources.
Use in a glove box (ideal) or a fume hood under dry, inert atmosphere (Schlenk
techniques).
Emergency Procedure:
Spill: Powdered lime, dry sand, clay based kitty litter to completely smother and
cover any spill. DO NOT USE WATER!
Fire: Use Class D (yellow) fire extinguisher if available, otherwise try to smother
with any of the nonflammable solids listed above. If the fire is too large, GET
OUT and call Public Safety.
If person is exposed or on fire; use the stop, drop, and roll methods, safety
showers, fire blankets, appropriate fire extinguisher. Seek medical attention
Even if the incident is resolved, contact Public Safety.
10
