4.2 Proposed Vapor Extraction System (VES)
GeoAudit will install an internal combustion (IC) unit at the site The specific IC unit will
be chosen by representatives of Chapin Bros , Inc As indicated by the vapor extraction
test, soil conditions at the site are conducive to rapid removal of high concentrations of
' petroleum hydrocarbons by this type of system
GeoAudit proposes to extract vapors from both VE-1 and VE-2 Both wells can be easily
' piped and fitted to the VES By utilizing VE-2 as an extraction well, 'Ae hope to remove
hydrocarbon vapors from impacted soil within the immediate area beneath Buena Vista
Avenue and, eventually, from the area near NIW-3
4.3 Permitting
Permitting will be necessary for any permanent or semi-permanent SVE unit It is our
understanding that RSI maintains operational permits on the SAVE system However,
GeoAudit also maintains a vaiious locations permit for the VACLEEN 1000, an IC-engine
based SVE unit The VACLEEN permit was obtained in 1991 from the San Joaquin Valley
Unified Air Pollution Contiol District (SJVUAPCD) Infoimation on the VACLEEN is
included in Appendix I
4.4 System Location and Design
MThe SVE will be located on the west side of the propeity in a recessed area along the
western wall of the building A natuial gas meter is located in this area, and access space
will have to be made for P G & E Althougli this is the piefeiied location, local permitting
Wray not allow the installation of the unit in this are because of the gas meter Therefore
an alternate location for the unit would be inside a gate, along the east wail of the building
The piefeiied location will iequne a minimum of piping to connect VE-1 and VE-2 and,
if desired at a later date, VW-1 The alteinate location along the east wall of the building
will require more piping and trenching At either location, the unit should be fenced inside
' a gated, locked enclosure
Two-inch PVC piping will be installed from VE-1 and VE-2 to the SVE unit dropout drum
The piping will carry hydrocarbon vapors from the well heads to the SVE unit A PVC ball
valve will be installed in each line so vapors can be dia%-Nn from each «ell independently, if
' necessary
All PVCwill be installed below ground surface, in a shallow trench to the fenced enclosure
' From the enclosure to the diop-out dium, the line will be installed above-ground A plan
of the proposed piping and VES unit location is illustrated in Figure 5
1
G-1-8-1 A.3.1 Se,".».
