Chemical Analysis of Soil Samples A total of 69 sod samples was collected from the ten bonngs
Fifty-eight of the sod samples were screened in the field using a PID The field PID readings indicated that
headspace concentrations of volatile organic compounds ranged from nondetectable to 600 parts per
million Table 9 of this report lasts the depths and PID readings for the sod samples that were screened in
the field
' One soil sample each from borings C1 through C5 and C7 through C10 and four sod samples from boring
C6 were submitted to the laboratory for analysis Thirteen sod samples were submitted to the laboratory for
TPH-g and BTEX analysis by EPA Method 8015/8020 The laboratory reported concentrations of TPH-g
t and BTEX were below the respective detection limns for all the samples with the excepbon of the sod
sample collected from 26 feet below grade in boring C6 The laboratory reported BTEX concentrations of
3,800 micrograms per kilogram(ug/kg), 11,000 ug/kg,3,500 ug/kg,and 19,000 ug/kg,respectively,were
' present in the 26-foot sample from C6 The laboratory also reported 220 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg)
of TPH-g from the same sample Results of the laboratory analysis of sod samples are summarized in
Table 3 of this report Copies of the certified laboratory reports and chain-of-custody records are contained
' in Appendix F Concentrations of BTEX and TPH-g are plotted on the geologic cross-sections
Chemical Analysis of Groundwater Samples Groundwater samples were collected from sod boreholes
C8,C9,and C10 through temporary monitoring wells The laboratory analysis reported no concentrations
of TPH-g and BTEX above the associated detection limas for the groundwater samples collected from sod
boreholes C9 and C10 The laboratory reported BTEX concentrations for the groundwater sample from
sod borehole C8 of 540 micrograms per liter(ug/L), 900 ug/L, 1,200 ug/L,and 8,000 ug/L,respectively A
TPH-g level of 34 milligrams per liter was also reported in the groundwater sample collected from sod
borehole C8 Results of the laboratory analysis of groundwater samples are summarized in Table 5
i
Copies of the certified laboratory reports and chain-of-custody records are contained in this appendix
Soil Vapor Extraction Test On April 22 and 23, 1996,a sod vapor extraction test was performed to
mearsure the induced vacuum at sod boreholes C4 and C8 versus the distance from the operating vapor
extraction wells The sod vapor extraction system was turned on April 22, 1996,and was operated for
apprioximately 24 hours On April 22 and 23,applied vacuum pressure readings at the four operational
ivapor extraction wells(MW-1, MW-2,MW-3,and MW-4) and induced vacuum pressure readings at C4 and
C8 were collected to evaluate the extent of influence of the operating wells Readings were taken using
magnahetic gauges measured in inches of water vacuum
After 24 hours of operating the SVES,the induced vacuum readings at C4 and C8 were 0 60 and 105
' inches of water vacuum, respectively The vapor extraction pilot study performed in 1990 determined a
radius of influence ranging from 80 to 90 feet,at the maximum flow rate tested (130 cubic feet per minute)
The readings collected on April 23, 1996,show influence at C4 approximately 35 feet from the nearest
' extraction well,MW4 This indicates that the sod in the vicinity of soil boreholes C4 and C8 is within the
radius of influence of the operation of the vapor extraction system
' Physical Properties Analysis of Soil Samples Four sod samples were retained for laboratory analysis
for effective porosity, bulk density, and TOC content The laboratory(PTS Laboratories, Inc) reported
effective porosity ranged from 35 3 percent to 43 5 percent The bulk density ranged from 1 51 grams per
' cubic centimeter(g/cc)to 174 g/cc The TOC ranged from 230 mg/kg to 630 mg/kg Copies of the
laboratory reports and chain-of-custody record are contained in this appendix
s
APPBEWPO FLUOR DANIEL GTI
'
I
