A
Fourth Quarter 1,993 Status Report January 6, 1994
Golden Grain Company, Manteca Bean Facility, 229 Moffat Blvd , Manteca CA 3
• Taking flame-ionization detector (FID) measurements of system vapor effluent and
influent,
• Checking and recording the catalytic oxidizer operational data,
• Checking and calibrating the system lower explosive limit (LEL) meters,
• Checking and recording system lead scrubber operational parameters,
• Recording operational data and maintaining rotron blowers and vapor extraction
system,
• Checking and recording operational data for LO-PRO'" Lo-Profile Air Stripper,
making adjustments as necessary, and
• Performing a daily system operating parameters check via modem
Primarily due to electrical equipment failures and normal attrition of electrical components, the
system was only operational for 45 days during the fourth quarter The following is a list of the days
that the remediation system was not operational
9/18 - 24/93 Fuse failure in catalytic oxidizer and burned thermocouple in lead
scrubber
9/27 - 10/18/93 Lead scrubber fuse block, wiring, and solid state relays were burned
as a result of a relay failure in the "on" position This type of relay is
designed or usually fails in the "off" position thereby breaking the
circuit In this case, however, the circuit remained locked "on",
overheating the adjacent components The initial relay failure was
probably because of the high heat operational environment for the
relay and normal switching (frequency) Ide of the relay The length
of down time after this problem resulted from waiting for back
ordered parts necessary to make repairs
10/22 - 29/93 Catalytic oxidizer main fuse failure and heater high temperature
control damaged Parts availability lengthened down time for this
repair
11/05 - 09/93 Wires for lead scrubber thermocouple damaged from overheating
This was a result of the terminal connections for the wires becoming
loose from constant temperature change associated with normal
operation of the unit The thermocouple signal did not reach the
temperature control unit, due to the loose connections, causing the
scrubber to continue to draw power and heat beyond normal
operating temps A new thermocouple was installed and special
high heat "lock-tight" was put on the terminal connections
3879RO23 070
GROUNDWATER
TECHNOLOGY,INC
