Fourth Quarter 1994 Status Report 3
Golden Grain Company, Manteca Bean Facility,229 Moffat Blvd , Manteca, CA December 22, 1994
and MW-4)were converted to vapor extraction wells and the lead scrubber was removed from the vapor
stream
Treatment system modifications were initiated for two reasons The addition of MW-1 and MW-4 was
completed to Increase the mass of extracted vapor phase hydrocarbons from subsurface soils The lead
scrubber was eliminated from the vapor stream because recent laboratory analysis of soil vent gas
Indicated there Is no longer any measurable tetraethyl lead vapors
System modifications were scheduled following notification and approval from the San Joaquin Valley
Unified Air Pollution Control District (SJVUAPCD) and the City of Manteca Budding Department No
permits were required from either agency, although the soil vapor stream influent and effluent was
sampled for total lead on two consecutive weeks after the addition of MW-1 and MW-4 to the vapor
stream Total lead samples were taken on October 19 and 27, 1994 to verify that no lead was present
All laboratory results indicated that no lead was present in the soil vapor stream and subsequently the
lead scrubber was removed from the system on November 4, 1994 Laboratory results are included in
attachment 4
Between October 11 and November 1, 1994, vapor extraction wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, and M-4 were
• continuously operated Vapor extraction well MW-3 was shut down on November 1, 1994, and the
remaining three wells were continuously operated MW-3 was shut down because no vapor phase
hydrocarbon concentrations were detected in the extracted vapor stream Subsequent to adding MW-1
and MW-4 to the vapor extraction system, the influent hydrocarbon concentrations Increased
significantly After one week, system vapor phase hydrocarbon concentrations returned to levels
consistent with previous data Following treatment system modifications, the weekly operation and
maintenance returned to a normal schedule
The soil treatment system currently extracts vapor phase hydrocarbons from wells MW-1, MW-2, and
MW-4 The groundwater treatment system extracts groundwater from well RW-1 During the quarter,
14 site visits were made to perform system operation and maintenance work Work performed during
each maintenance event included
■ taking flame-ionization detector (FID) measurements of catalytic oxidizer vapor Influent and
effluent
■ checking and recording the catalytic oxidizer operational data
■ checking and calibrating the system lower explosive limit (LEL) meters
• checking and recording system lead vapor scrubber operational parameters (prior to
removal of the equipment from the vapor stream)
0102RO44 202
❑ GROUNDWATER
❑ TECHNOLOGY,INC
