The California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has developed this fact sheet to inform the public about the regulatory closure of two hazardous waste treatff ent and disposal (open burn vessel and open detonation pit) units at the Physics International Company Tracy Test Facility. DTSC intends to approve a closure plan for the closure of these units, and pro oses to approve a Negative Declaration for the project. The Negative Declaration states, for e purposed of the California Environmental Quality Act, that the closure does not present significant dverse impact to human health and the environment. This fact sheet 1contains background information about the facility, a description of the closure plan, an overview of a closure process, and information on opportunities for public involvement. H. Physics Interna ional Company is located at 32727 S. Corral Hollow Road, southwest of city of Tracy, California (F g. 1). The facility occupies approximately 476 acres in a rural area. The closest resident (a ranc er) lives 1.5 miles away from the facility. Physics Interna ional Company has been operating its Tracy facility since 1965 for research on explosive (conventi al)warheads. Through its operations, Physics International Company produces various hazar ous wastes such as waste oil from automobile maintenance; film wash water from developing X-ray ictures; waste explosives; waste contaminated with explosives such as kimwipes; etc.; and "pi water" from washing of molds and other equipment contaminated with explosives. 7
