. MASS-VOLUME CALCULATIONS
Bob's Muffler Shop
466 Moffat Boulevard, Manteca, California
INTRODUCTION
The following is the calculated volume and mass of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and ground
water for the site located at 466 Moffat Boulevard, Manteca, California. Figures 1 and 2 provide
geographic location and on-site structures, monitoring well and boring locations.
SOIL MASS-VOLUME CALCULATIONS
Assumptions:
• Utilizing Figures 3 and 4, the mass distribution of total petroleum hydrocarbon
concentrations on-site can be approximated by four contoured zones, with the inner zone
containing the highest TPH-g concentrations and the outer zone containing the lowest. The
volume of the inner zone can be approximated utilizing a cone;the volume of the other zones
were approximated utilizing an elliptical cone and block shapes.
The volume of a cone can be calculated by the formula:
V = 113 n r h, where"r" is the radius of the cone and"h" is the height of the cone.
The volume of the other zones can mostly be calculated by the formula for an elliptical cone:
V= 113 n a b h,where"a"is the shortest distance from the center, "b" is the longest
distance from the center and"h" is the height of the cone.
To be calculated accurately,zone three must be split into two areas and combined. The first can be
calculated using the above formula for an elliptical cone. The second volume can be calculated by
the block formula:
V= a b h, where"a"is the length of the short side, "b"is the length of the long side
and "h" is the height of the zone.
1) For the estimated inner zone (500 mg/kg contour line):
r= 16.5 ft and h= 6.6 ft
2) For the estimated second zone (100 mg/kg contour line):
a= 41.8 ft, b = 62 ftand h=9.75 ft.
•
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
