Item No . 2
PC : 10-8-87
SA-88-9
Page 4
lity is in operation. It is the livestock meat inspector ' s
responsibility to ensure that the processing and labeling of
products meet State requirements . The meat inspector can be
(and generally is) an employee of the custom slaughterhouse .
Also , the State requires that a log be kept that documents all
animals killed at the facility. A copy of the log entries is
sent to the State Department of Food and Agriculture on a
monthly basis .
Odor :
If operated in a proper manner , the slaughterhouse is not
expected to create odor problems for adjacent properties . The
waste water from the washdown of the facilities must pass
through a 1600-gallon grease trap prior to reaching the open
evaporation pond on the project site . The grease trap will
catch and retain the animal waste that could cause objec-
tionable odors . The material from the grease trap will be
routinely removed by a tallow company .
FACILITIES/SERVICES :
The custom slaughterhouse proposes to utilize an existing private
well for the water supply and an existing septic system for
sewage disposal . The Local Health District is requiring a cross-
connection control device on the water well to protect it against
contamination and back-siphonage . Storm drainage is proposed as
terminal drainage to the South San Joaquin Irrigation District
drainage canal . It should be noted that drainage on the parcel
as a whole may utilize District facilities ; however , it is
strictly prohibited for any drainage from the slaughterhouse
operation to enter the South San Joaquin Irrigation District
drainage canal . All drainage from the slaughter facility will be
contained in an on-site evaporation pond.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS :
An Initial Study was prepared on August 12 , 1987 . Any poten-
tially significant effects are mitigated via the proposed site
plan and conditions of approval . Based on the Initial Study, a
Negative Declaration was prepared.
