6.1 Baseline Data Collection and Startup
' Prior to the pilot system startup, groundwater monitoring was performed from each nested
piezometer pair including the pairs in each DDC well annulus and air sparge well AS 1, to
establish baseline conditions for the test The baseline sampling was performed on September 25
1 and 26, 2001 This sampling consisted of field measurements for temperature and water level
Groundwater samples were collected for laboratory analysis of TPHg by EPA method 8015,
BTEX by EPA method 8020, and MTBE, TAME, ETBE, DIPS, and TBA by EPA method 8260,
and rhodamine WT dye concentrations prior to system startup
' Additionally, dissolved oxygen was monitored in each well prior to the start up of the air sparge
test The laboratory reports and chain of custody forms are presented in Appendix D
Subsequent monitoring and sampling was performed periodically throughout the test These data
are summarized in Table 9
The pilot system was initiated on December 3, 2001 and concluded on January 3, 2002
(approximately 31 days) Well ASI was used to evaluate the site-specific radius of influence
created by a DDC well at the site On the first day of startup, a 1 33 percent solution of
rho damime WT dye was infected into AS as a tracer to evaluate the well's radius of influence
During initial system startup and each week thereafter, field measurements for groundwater
depth and dissolved oxygen were taken at the site These monitoring dates were December 4
1 through December 7, December 11, December 17, December 27, 2001, and January 3, 2002
The groundwater depth was measured with an electronic water level probe The dissolved
oxygen concentrations were measured with a down-hole YSI Model 95 probe and meter Both
probes were decontaminated between each sampling point with an Alconox detergent wash and
tap water rinse
' On December 11, December 17, December 27, 2001, and January 3, 2002, following the field
parameter measurements, water samples were collected for analyses This sampling was
performed from the piezometers and wells associated with ASI The wells and sampling points
included AS 1, AS 1(s), AS 1(d), PZ 1 a(s), PZ 1 a(d), and PZ 1 b(d) These samples were collected
using a disposable bailer The groundwater samples were transferred to appropriate sample
containers, labeled, and stored on ice in an insulated cooler Following collection, the samples
' were transported under chain-of-custody documentation for chemical analysis Each sample was
analyzed for TPHg by EPA method 8015, BTEX by EPA method 8020, and MTBE, TAME,
ETBE, DIPE, and TBA by EPA method 8260 at Argon Analytical in Ceres, California and
rhodamine WT dye by Western Analysis in Salt Lake City, Utah The laboratory reports and
