SUMMARY OF INVESTIGATIVE WORK TO DATE
An initial soil and water survey was conducted by
California Geological , Inc. for the Carnation Can Company site
located at 1815 Navy Drive in Stockton, California.
Three soil borings were made utilizing a hollow-stem auger
with a modified California Split Spoon Sampler . Laboratory
samples were collected at three foot intervals. All samples
were sealed and refrigerated prior to transportation to the
laboratory for analysis. Gravel located between two and three
feet precluded the possibility of sampling with the split spoon
sampler within this interval .
Borings were sealed using a bentonite slurry, installed
from the bottom up under the direct supervision of the San
Joaquin Local Health District (SJLHD) . At the conclusion of
the initial investigation, the borings were capped with
concrete and numbered.
All cuttings from the drilling operation were contained in
sealed, labeled 55 gallon drums which remain on the site.
Three wells were drilled to sample the ground water and
determine the hydraulic gradient. All three wells are of
identical construction (see monitoring well construction
diagram) but, the two southernmost wells have been labeled
piezometers as this is their primary function. Depth of each
of the wells was 35 feet. Perforated casing was installed with
the slotted_ interval between 20 and 35 feet and sand packed to
within 16 feet of the surface. A bentonite slurry was used to
cap the wells and was supervised by the SJLHD. Locking caps
and water tight, traffic resistant boxes were then placed on
the wells.
Prior to sampling , all three wells were developed by
bailing 110 gallons of water from each. Bailed water was
collected in 55 gallon drums which are labeled and remain on
the site . Following development, each well was sampled using a
PTFE bailer which had been steam cleaned immediately preceding
sample collection.
A preliminary investigation of nearby pumping wells has
determined that no wells exist within a 2000 feet radius of the
site.
1
